The Adventure

- Creating the Perfect Dome

Scandinavian Domes did not begin with a business plan.

It began with a place.

During the pandemic, we started spending more and more time on Granberget in northern Sweden — a small village surrounded by forests, silence, snow, and open landscapes. What first began as an opportunity to reconnect with nature slowly grew into something much bigger.

It began with a fascination for geodesic architecture and evolved into an ambition to create the perfect dome. Since then, we have immersed ourselves in geometry, materials, craftsmanship, and Nordic building traditions while developing our own prototypes high up on the mountain.

Scandinavian Domes is still early in its journey. We continue to test, learn, and refine every detail with the ambition of creating beautiful and long-lasting domes shaped by Scandinavian design, Nordic materials, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for nature.

Below the images, you will find the full story if you would like to explore it in greater depth.

The Adventure | The Full Story

During the pandemic, we began spending more and more time on Granberget in northern Sweden — a small settler village surrounded by forests, silence, snow, wood fires, and open landscapes. It offered an opportunity to change our surroundings, reconnect with nature, and experience a very different pace of life from the one we had known in central Sweden. What began as temporary stays slowly grew into something much bigger. The area surrounding Granberget carries a unique history. In the early 1800s, the Swedish government encouraged people to settle in these remote inland regions by granting large areas of land to families willing to build farms and create a life here. In many ways, it became Sweden’s own version of the frontier settlements of the American West.

What began as temporary stays slowly grew into something much bigger.

Over time, much of the forest land was acquired by the growing coastal forestry industry, helping shape several of the large forest companies that still exist today. What remained created space for recovery, craftsmanship — and eventually new ideas.

We began by building a local firewood business as a way to create jobs in the area and make use of the forests surrounding us. But alongside the practical work, another fascination slowly began to emerge.

Geodesic Domes – Curiosity Became a Passion

We were fascinated by the geometry, the strength, the light, and the remarkable sense of space these structures create. The deeper we explored the subject, the clearer it became that a truly well-built dome requires far more precision and understanding than most people initially imagine.

Over the past few years, we have immersed ourselves in the mathematics behind geodesic geometry, architecture, material selection, and how these structures behave in a demanding Nordic climate. We developed a detailed architectural 3D model where every angle, every joint, and every detail was defined with a high degree of precision. At the same time, we began developing our own prototypes in the workshop high up on the mountain.

Our ambition is not simply to build domes.
Our ambition is to create the perfect dome.
And that ambition influences every part of the process.

Our ambition is to create the perfect dome.

We work with slow-grown northern pine, carefully selected for its durability, stability, and character. In all weather-exposed parts of the structure, we use pine heartwood with dense growth rings formed during long northern winters.

To achieve the level of precision we are aiming for, we combine traditional craftsmanship with modern woodworking technology and industrial CNC precision, where even the smallest deviations can matter. At the same time, much of the project remains deeply rooted in craftsmanship.

We have spent countless hours discussing glazing solutions, sealing technologies, structural movement, adhesive systems, thermal expansion, and the interaction between different materials together with specialists in wood, glass, silicone, polycarbonate, and industrial sealing systems.

Every Prototype Teaches Us Something New

We also develop and design many details ourselves — including our fireplaces in corten steel and stainless steel — inspired by our fascination with the interplay between fire, materials, light, and space. The result is something that feels both architectural and human.

A surprisingly spacious room.

Close to nature.

Close to the sky.

Exposed to the changing seasons and the northern light — while remaining warm, calm, and sheltered within.

Scandinavian Domes is still early in its journey. We continue to test, refine, learn, and develop prototype after prototype here in the north. Yet the vision is already clear: to create beautiful and long-lasting domes shaped by Scandinavian design, Nordic materials, geometry, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for nature.

And this is only the beginning.

Stay Connected

During the summer of 2026, we selected three pilot partners from almost 100 applications from Sweden and abroad. The pilot year has now begun with installations in Hemavan, Åre and Borgafjäll.

Together with our pilot partners, we will continue refining every aspect of Scandinavian Domes over the coming year – from materials and craftsmanship to logistics, installation and long-term durability – ahead of our broader market launch in 2027.
Register your interest to follow our progress, receive updates from the project, and be among the first to hear when Scandinavian Domes opens for orders.
